What is a pole sign, and how is it different from a monument?
Both are freestanding signs, but they solve different problems. A monument sign sits low on a solid base and works at driveway distance. A pole sign raises the cabinet ten, twenty, or more feet in the air so it reads from much farther away — which is why shopping centers near highways, gas stations, and drive-thru restaurants use them. A pylon sign is the wider version of the same idea: a broad tower, often wrapped in aluminum or masonry-look cladding, that carries a main cabinet plus a stack of tenant panels. What does a multi-tenant pylon do for a shopping center?
For a retail center, the pylon is shared real estate: every tenant gets a lit panel at the road, and the center itself gets an anchor identity above them. We build tenant panels so they swap individually — when a tenant changes, the new panel slides in without touching the rest of the sign. Property managers appreciate that the wiring runs through serviceable access, so one dark panel doesn't mean opening the whole cabinet. How do engineering and wind load work for tall signs?
Height is what separates pole signs from everything else we build. A tall freestanding structure on the Gulf Coast has to be engineered for hurricane-zone wind loads: stamped drawings, a properly sized steel support, and a concrete footing designed for the soil and the sign's height and area. Jurisdictions around Houston commonly require sealed engineering before they'll issue a permit for a tall ground sign — unincorporated Harris County, for example, asks for engineered plans on taller structures. We coordinate the licensed structural engineer, the drawings, and the footing spec as part of the project, not as your homework.
Do pole signs need a permit in Houston?
Yes — a freestanding sign of any real height needs a permit everywhere in the Houston area, and the issuing office depends on the address: City of Houston Sign Administration inside city limits, the county for unincorporated areas, and different rules again in Katy, Sugar Land, and the other suburbs. Height and size limits also vary by jurisdiction, which affects what we design in the first place. Are your pole sign cabinets illuminated?
